While much of the constant and continuous boxing talk revolves around Mayweather/Pacquiao matchup rumors and drama, December held many quality championship and very notable bouts.

The #WomenofBoxing keep gaining steam in the boxing community, while trying to breach the gender barriers. December produced some more heavy hitting from the female side. Sonya Lamonakis put in her heavy hitting and captured the fans attention for best performance to end the year over strong Western and Eastern Hemisphere competition with heavy credentials.

For the inaugural IBO Heavyweight World Championship, Lamonakis (10-1-2, 1 KO) and Carlette Ewell (15-8-1, 9 KOs) met at the center of the ring on neutral soil of Sint Maarten. The December 6th match was also the rematch from their 2012 draw in New York.

This championship match was a war as both ladies came to battle. The 4 time champion, Ewell, and the determined to be champion school teacher, Lamonakis, went toe to toe for 10 rounds and left everything in the ring. Lamonakis was awarded the green IBO belt by a Split Decision in the second installment of the rivalry. Scores: 98-95, 96-97, 96-94.

2015 is destined to contain a 3rd matchup between these two as well as a potential unification with the WBC champion, Martha Salazar, whom issues Lamonakis her only defeat.

During the day, Lamonakis teaches lessons to today’s youth – tomorrow’s leaders. In her off-time, the Champ is teaching her competitors who the boss is.

Stock is definitely on the rise in the women’s heavyweight division!

Lamonakis on her #BotM honor:
“I’m honored to be boxer of the month. Twelve years of hard work to become a world champion. What’s even more special is that I beat a four time world champion to become one.
