Friday’s “No Excuses! Fight Night” show at Helsinki Kulttuuritalo finally took place after a month delay, with Eva Wahlström (22-0-1, 3 KOs) set to defend her WBC Super Featherweight Championship for a fourth time against Haiti-born and WBC Super Featherweight Silver title holder Melissa St. Vil (10-3-4, 1 KO) of Brooklyn, NY.

In a well-balanced battle, St. Vil came out with initiative, quick hands, and solid hooks finding the mark. Wahlström’s steady counters and heavy hands kept the advantage.

In a close championship tussle, controversy came into play in the 7th Round. St. Vil delivered a left hook that send Wahlström veering to her left and into a following right. Wahlström was sent backwards and to the canvas, an obvious knockdown. Yet, the referee ruled it a “slip” and prevented a potential 2-point scoring shift that ultimately became a pivotal moment in the match.

So where was the slip ?? @wbcboxing

After 10-rounds of championship action, it was left in the hands of the three judges.

Official Scores: 95-95, 97-93, 96-94 giving Wahlström a slim victory to retain her WBC strap.

The show was presented by Team F4L, a new promotional company that is part owned by Wahlström and her boxer husband Niklas Räsänen.

In looking at the scores and little administrative issues on site, the apparent Split Draw should warrant a rematch of the WBC World and the WBC Silver Champions in the near future.
