On Wednesday evening at the Gimnasio Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica, local favorite Hanna “La Amazona Black” Gabriels (20-2-1, 11 KOs) dealt the first loss to her challenging opponent Abril Vidal (8-1, 3 KOs), of Argentina.

The Broadway Boxing Main Event was a bigger challenge for Gabriels than expected as Vidal came to snatch up the WBA Super Welterweight Championship that has been held for the last three years.

Vidal was coming off of a June victory over numerous time championship contender in Yamila Reynoso and pushed Gabriels for the full 10 rounds of championship action.

Official Scores: 96-94 ,97-93, 97-93

After the win Gabriels, who dedicated this fight to the Costa Rica refugees) stated: “It is never pressure to fight at homes, it’s a privilege. It is a privilge and an honor to be in my honme country. And plus to be able to give this kind of excitement, with opponents like this (Vidal) is just an honor.”

Even in defeat, Vidals has a bright future.

DiBella has Gabriels signed to a promotional contract. Are we looking at a potential unification in the Super Welterweight division with Canada’s IBF Champion Marie-Eve Dicaire (under GYM Promotions), Poland’s WBC Champion Ewa Piatkowska, or jump bang with the best out there?
