On Saturday September 22 in Mexicali, Mexico, Alfredo “King” Mejia Vargas won the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Mexican Super Bantamweight title with a unanimous decision over local favourite Leonardo Baez.

On a show promoted by Gladiador Promotions at the Auditorio del Estado, Mejia started to dominate the fight from the third round on, and used his jab to keep Baez at bay for most of the fight. After ten rounds of boxing it was clear that the visitor from Ensenada had done enough to win.

Judges Ray Armendariz and Antonio Lizarraga scored the fight 98-92 and 97-93 respectively, while Judge Daniel Lopez had it closer at 96-94. Mejia Vargas improved his professional record to 11-1-3 (2), Baez falls to 12-2 (7).

Also on Saturday, In Vienna, Austria, WBF Womens World Lightweight Champion Nicole Wesner retained her title for the fourth time when she stopped last minute replacement Nana Chakhvashvili from Georgia in the fifth round.

Wesner, now 15-0 (7), was originally scheduled to face Lina Tejada, but the Domican was refused a visa only a few days before the fight, and Chakvashvili, 6-8 (4), stepped in to save the day. Unfortunately it was a one-sided affair, as Wesner was several levels above the challenger.
