Mercado keen for first exacting title defense

World Boxing Council super-bantamweight champion, Yamileth Mercado, already has a date, rival and venue to make the first defense of her title.

After being crowned in November against former champion Fatuma Zarika, she will now defend her title against Zambia native Catherine Phiri, who is the official challenger.

This will happen on March 21 at the “Rodrigo M. Quevedo” gymnasium in Chihuahua, Mexico, one of the best venues in this city.

Yamileth will face a capable opponent, because Catherine Phiri is an experienced and seasoned fighter. Accordingly, the champion plans to arrive in excellent condition in her quest for victory. “Yeimi” is already training hard, guided by her coach, Alfredo Caballero.
