Yesenia Gómez wins MD

Yesenia Gomez came out ahead in her first defense of the World Boxing Council light flyweight title against Japanese challenger Erika Hanawa, whom she defeated by majority decision, 97-93, 95-95 and 97 -93.

In the battle at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, the Champion connected with the best shots, thanks to a well defined and adroitly executed strategy, managing to adjust and adapt.

The Champion took advantage of her greater reach and stature, confronting a challenger who came to fight, knowing that she had to be aggressive. From the first round she did so by attacking and exerting plush applying pressure at all times.

The Mexican was smart, by keeping her left jab working, setting up crisp rights.

In the partial scores after four rounds, the Champion was ahead on two cards, 39-37, while the other judge had it draw 38-38.

In the middle of the match, the Challenger pressed the fight, throwing from all angles, obliging the Mexican to boxing in reverse.

In the corner her coach Rubén Lira told the “Niña” who was under pressure, to throw more quickly to prevent the Japanese from piercing her guard, by cutting range.

After eight rounds, the scores: we’re 77-75, 77-75 and 78-74 for Yesenia.

The closing was intense, with two fighters giving everything at the ring, but with the champion was fighting better.

With this triumph, Yesenia improved her record to 15-5-3, 6 KOs, compared to the 10-4, 4 KOs of Hanawa.
